Douglas Benson Obituary

Douglas L. Benson, 80, of Grand Forks, died on Thursday, December 19, 2019, in Altru Hospital Grand Forks, ND, only forty days after the death of his beloved wife.

Douglas Lowell was born on January 16, 1939, in Argyle, to Nels and Edith (Peterson) Benson. He graduated from Argyle High School in 1956, and on December 31, 1957 was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart, June LaBine. Doug prided himself on keeping his word: the two kept their vows until the end and never let a quarrel in religion come between them.

Following the wedding, Douglas served as a US Army Paratrooper. The two traveled the country, living in Kentucky, Louisiana, and other states; even living in Germany for a time, (where their first son was born). Doug's assignments were oftentimes long and classified: he'd bring his family to where he was stationed only to pack up and take off again. Douglas and June had three more children and eventually landed back in Argyle.

In November of 1972, Douglas and June moved into Grand Forks, where he was a heavy equipment salesman for John Deere, and later Titan Machinery. In later years, Douglas even began attending church with June at Holy Family Catholic Church because he knew “if it's good enough for June, it's good enough for me.”

Douglas is survived by his children, Brenda (Eddie) Skinner, Brian (Jeanne) Benson, and Bruce Benson; daughter-in-law, Marsha Benson; grandchildren, Wyatt and Kyle Benson, Kemra (Kevin) Williams and Stacie (Trevor) Snare, Matthew and Stefany Benson, and Kylie, Collin, and Katie Benson; eleven great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Jeri Benson; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife, June, who died on November 9th of this year; Douglas was preceded in death by his parents; and eldest son, Brad Benson; and all of his siblings, Lambert (Lola), Maurice, Lois Courneya, Genevieve (Orville) Johnson, and Floyd (Doris) Benson.
