Gertrude “Gertie” Kuznia, 99, of Warren, MN, passed away Saturday morning, July 13, 2019 at North Star Manor with her family by her side.
Gertrude Elizabeth Woinarowicz was born on March 8, 1920 in Eagle Point Township, Marshall County, MN, the daughter of George and Agnes (Grembowski) Woinarowicz. She was raised in rural Stephen where she attended country school and was Baptized and Confirmed in the Catholic faith. On June 11, 1946, Gertrude was united in marriage to World War II veteran, Louie Kuznia. They made their home in rural Warren. She was a cook at Warren High School for 25 years, retiring in 1984. In 2008, they moved into the city of Warren. Louie died on December 31, 2010. Gertrude continued to live on her own until moving to North Star Manor in January of 2019.
Gertie was a member of Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church where she belonged to the Alter Society and provided fresh flowers from her flower gardens for many services. Her Catholic beliefs were very important to her and she was a great example of faith. She was also a member of the Warren American Legion Auxiliary.
She had many talents and hobbies that she nurtured over the years. Gertie was an avid quilter, an excellent cook and baker and had immaculately kept flower and vegetable gardens. She was known for her gingersnap cookies, donuts and bread. Gertie took great pride in the homemade meals that were prepared when she cooked at the high school. She would can much of the fruits and vegetables that came from her gardens. After Gertie and Louie moved to town, you would often see her in her well fenced backyard garden with her handmade hat on tending to her garden in the heat of the day. She would build big wire fences around her gardens over the years to the keep the animals out and she was disappointed when she was not allowed to have her gun in town to protect her garden.
Left to mourn her passing are five children, Ron (Carole) Kuznia and Phyllis (Henry) Hammerback all of Bemidji, MN, Donna (Sid) Brouse of Thief River Falls, MN, Marilyn (Arlyn) Stroble of Warren, MN and Curt Kuznia of Spicer, MN; thirteen grandchildren, David (Tami) Kuznia of Grand Forks, ND, Thom (Shannon) Kuznia of Edina, MN, Jerrod (Joy) Hammerback of Alexandria, MN, Jason Hammerback of Becker, MN, Justin (Heidi) Hammerback of Shakopee, MN, Jeff (Lesley) Brouse and Tom (Kari) Brouse all of Thief River Falls, MN, Tiffany Stock of West Fargo, ND, Damon (Ashley) Stroble of Warren, MN, Kelsey Svoboda of Grand Forks, ND, Nicole (Zak) Kustok of Evanston, IL, Lindsay (Dan) Buchholz of Sartel, MN and Ben (Kristen) Kuznia of Chaska, MN; thirty-two great-grandchildren; sister, Katy Widstrand of Blaine, MN and many nieces and nephews.
