Rose Czapiewski, 96, of Crookston, formerly of Warren, MN, died on Friday, July 26, 2019, in Villa St. Vincent, Crookston.
Rose Johanna was born on May 17, 1923, in Bigwoods Township, Marshall County, to John and Veronica (Merchlewicz) Czapiewski. She was raised on the family farm, and was the second-youngest of nine children. She was lucky enough to complete high school during a time where it wasn't common. She graduated in 1941 from Oslo High School, her education being sponsored by her older brother, Ernest. She worked for several area families before going off on her first “adventure.”
A friend of Rose's was planning on enlisting in the US Navy during wartime. Rose thought it would be “better than milking cows,” and set off to the coast to serve her country. Arriving in the Bronx, Rose served her country from 1943-1946 before her honorable discharge. She remained on the east coast, living in Laurel, Maryland and working as an accountant for several hotel businesses. On visits home to the Midwest, her family knew her as their “Movie Star Aunt;” as all 6-feet of her was dressed to the nines with not a hair out of place!
As Rose grew older, she was determined to spend her golden years back in Minnesota with her family. When she was 64, she moved to Warren and was so happy to be “home” again. No adventure was too big (or too small) for Rose: she was always happy to do the unexpected or turn a simple day trip into an exciting event. She cherished the time she spent with nieces and nephews, and especially appreciated their care in her declining years.
Rose will be remembered as a proud veteran, a 32-year member of the Warren American Legion, a faithful Catholic, and a special “Ciotka” to her nieces and nephews.
She is survived by her many nieces and nephews, and was preceded in death by all of her siblings: infant brothers, Harry and Felix; baby sister, Regina; adult brothers and sisters (and their spouses), Sally (Vernon) Anderson, Helen (Florian) Pokrzywinski, Dorothy (Irving) Iverson, Clarence Czapiewski, and Ernie (Doris) Czapiewski.
Memorials may be directed to the St. Joseph Cemetery Fund, Oslo.
