Alan Russell Borst, 60, of Grand Forks, ND, passed away on November 2, 2021, at Altru Hospital surrounded by his family, after a long and hard-fought battle with cancer.
Alan was born on July 27, 1961, in Williston, ND, to Melvin and Avis (LeRohl) Borst. He graduated from Red River High School in 1979. He began working for Cenex at the age of 16, and worked for them until the time of his death. Alan also hauled beets for Chuck Nelson Farms for twenty years. Alan and his beloved wife, Betty, made their home together in Grand Forks.
Family was Alan's Number 1 priority. His wife, three children, and five grandchildren meant everything to him. His passion was sports- especially Sioux hockey- and he enjoyed watching his grandkids and nephews excel in them. Alan was one of the most generous and selfless men you would ever meet. He enjoyed playing cards with friends and family, as well as taking care of his beautiful, plush, and verdant lawn. Though it was his pride and joy, Alan never once vacuumed his lawn (despite what you might have heard).
One of Alan's most-loved qualities was his sharp wit and his sense of humor.
Alan is survived by his wife, Betty; children, Jolene (Travis) Sorenson, Chris (Faith) Borst, and Aaron Borst; five grandchildren, Gavin, Gage, and Gannon Sorenson, Rylan and Kennedy Borst; his siblings, Barb Galloway, Joanne (Tom) Graves, Arden (Wanda) Borst; mother-in-law, Virginia Gerszewski; brothers-and-sisters-in-law, Jerome (Diane) and Mark (Mara) Gerszewski, Theresa (Scott) Lind, Susan (Joel) Slominski, Mary Jewett, and Jane Gerszewski; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Beverly Kahler and Janet Fish; and father-in-law, James Gerszewski.
To honor him, Alan requested that those attending his funeral wear their best Sioux attire.
