Donald Kathman Obituary

Donald Kathman, 85, of Argyle, MN, passed away on Tuesday morning, July 28, 2020 at Sanford Medical Center in Fargo, ND after a long courageous battle with cancer surrounded by his five girls.

Donald Harry Kathman was born on February 12, 1935, in Wanger Township, Marshall County, MN, to Harry and Theresa (Pawlowski) Kathman. He was raised in Argyle, and attended country school just west of the family farm. He was inducted into the US Army in 1958, serving his country as a paratrooper in the 101st Airborne Division out of Lawton, Oklahoma. He was honorably discharged in 1962, returning home to farm. On September 2, 1961, Donald was united in Holy Matrimony to Stella Szczepanski, in Assumption Catholic Church in Florian, MN. They made their home together in Argyle before purchasing his parents' farm, where they would raise five daughters. Stella passed away on August 1, 2013.

As a lifelong resident of Argyle, “Catfish” was active in his church, St. Rose of Lima; the Argyle American Legion; and the Argyle Sportsmans Club. He was an original member and cook (called “Doris” by his friends) of Camp 7 in Caribou, MN. Donald enjoyed cruising on his golf cart, gardening, fishing and hunting, even making it out last deer season in spite of his progressing illness. He also enjoyed trips to the casino, watching the Twins and Vikings, and attending high school sports or listening to them on the radio. He truly loved the gift of spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Left to mourn his passing are his daughters, Laurie (David) Silewski of Valley City, ND, Linda (Dave) Bergeron of Wayzata, MN, Lisa (David) Sorenson of Argyle, MN, LuAnn (Pat) Dolan of Harwood, ND and Lana (Scot) Hoeper of Argyle, MN; 13 grandchildren, Holly (Matthew) Osborn, Adam (Greta) Silewski, Alex (Erika), Brady, and Emma Bergeron, Dana (Brandon) Setterholm, Brandon (Betsy) Sorenson, Brooke (Austin) Grochowski, Bret, Austin (Wylie), and Sean Dolan, Taylor (Evan Mattila) and Derek Hoeper; thirteen great-grandchildren, Ava, Ethan, Cici, Millie, Anna, Olivia, Myla, Jack, Blake, Boone, River, Payton and Kase; siblings, Leonard (Betty) Kathman, Leona (Bud) Paulson, JoAnn (Allen) St. Germain, and Ronald (Elizabeth) Kathman; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife, Stella, Donald is preceded in death by his parents; grandchildren, Amber and Colby Hoeper; sister-in-law, Theresa Kathman; and niece and nephew, Lynelle St. Germain and Rick Bergeron.
