Donald Matz Obituary

Donald Matz, 73, of Warren, MN died on Thursday, December 14, 2023, at North Star Manor of Warren, after a long battle with Parkinsons.

Donald George was born on September 5, 1950, in Miller, SD, to George and Edna (Johnson) Matz. He followed his father’s job as a teacher, growing up in Pine River, MN; McVille, ND; and Freeport, IL. He graduated from high school in 1968 in Freeport, IL, and put his college degree on hold to join the US Navy. After enlisting in 1970, Don served aboard the nuclear powered submarine USS Thomas Jefferson as a machinist. During his time in the Navy, Don traveled the globe, crossing both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans before his honorable discharge in 1976.

After completing his degree in Elementary Education at Mayville (ND) State, Don took a job as a librarian at the Warren Public School. There he fell in love with Carolyn Stengl, a fellow educator. They were married on July 26, 1980. After leaving the library, Don worked as the Warren City Clerk before becoming the Solid Waste Administrator/Safety Coordinator for Marshall County in 1988. He retired from the county in 2012.

Don was very active in his community. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, Warren American Legion Post #27 and the Pony Booster Club. He volunteered on the Hospital Endowment Board, Marshall Manor Good Samaritan Advisory Board, Marshall County Fair Board, Warren Volunteer Fire Department, Riverside Golf Course Board of Directors, Warren Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, Northern Municipal Power Agency Board of Directors, and various church boards.

Don inherited a love of farm life from his grandfather, and he was blessed to raise a number of animals over the years. He kept in succession: angora goats, miniature donkeys, and (his favorite) pure-bred cattle. He enjoyed taking care of, talking about, and talking to his cows. Don also enjoyed golfing, especially with his son. Although his final years had their health challenges, Don's spirit never wavered.

Don was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend. Always gentle. Always kind. Always compassionate. Don is survived by his wife of 43 years, Carolyn; son, Marcus (Kelsie) Matz, and their children, Grayson, Parker, and Alexander; siblings, Jim Matz, Judy Webster, and Jeff (Sue) Matz; in-laws, Shirley (Doug) Minnick, Richard (Nancy) Stengl, and Jim (Darlene) Stengl; and great friends, Russ and Laurie Steer.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and sister-in-law, Roberta Stengl.
