Ed Heggen, 75, of Argyle, MN, died early Wednesday morning, December 15, 2021, in his home, under care of hospice.
Edmund Carl Heggen was born on June 2, 1946, in Stephen, MN, one of three sons born to Walter and Katherine (Gulbranson) Heggen. He graduated from Stephen High School in 1964, joining the Army National Guard soon after. On August 20, 1966, Ed was united in marriage to Marjorie Veralrud. They made their home in Warren. After Marge died in a car accident in 1975, Ed became acquainted with Patricia (Arneson) Nelson, the two meeting in a support group for widows. They were married on April 16, 1977, and the two merged their families and made their home in Warren. In 1980, Ed left his job at the local telephone company and the family moved to Argyle where he began working as a sales rep for Ottertail Power Company. He retired after 35 years of service calls and reporting in over the radio as “Argyle 10.”
Ed's hobbies were limited almost entirely to work. If he wasn't doing his job, Ed was working on one thing or another. He could fix any number of things, large and small, and was always there if you called him to help. He wasn't much of a talker, preferring to show his love primarily through action. Ed drove beet truck for 50 years, would put in a day's work, tinker around in the garage, and still have enough patience and gentleness left to play with his grandbabies. He enjoyed old cars, western films (and John Wayne), and dancing with his wife. The two were best friends and were often found washing their vehicles together on nice days. Ed was a longtime member of the Argyle American Legion, and was a volunteer firefighter for over 20 years.
Ed is survived by his wife of 44 years, Patty; children, Steve (Rachel) Heggen, Dana Bergeron, Victoria (Jason) Bunn, Kimberly (Wade) St. Germain, and Aaron Heggen; 14 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; and brothers, John (Linda) and Ken (Pat) Heggen.
In addition to his first wife, Marge, who died 46 years to-the-day before him; Ed was preceded in death by his daughter, Michelle Ross; and his parents.
Memorials may be directed to Hospice of the Red River Valley, whose staff took care of Ed the last nine months of his life.
