Eric Johnson Obituary

Eric Johnson, 62, lifelong farmer in Warren, MN, was called to his true Homeland on November 26, 2023, in his sleep while half a world away on safari in Namibia, Africa.

Eric James was born on May 20, 1961, the second (and most mischievous) of three sons born to James Everett Johnson and Shirley Mae (Stark). His childhood was spent entirely out of doors and he began working on the family farm at the age of 10. He graduated from Warren High School in 1980, and was married to his high school sweetheart, Lori Toupin, on December 27, 1983. They moved out to the farm shortly afterward, with Eric continuing his life's work and their rotation around the farmyard: from his childhood home, to two successive houses.

Each stage brought with it new joys and challenges. A driven brother, Eric was always hard at work exhibiting the “vision” he was known for. Able to see the big-picture, Eric enjoyed growing the farm and working alongside his father and brothers every day. As a devoted (and sometimes perfectionist) father, Eric enjoying passing on his standards and all else he'd learned to his two sons. He would often push the limits of efficiency at work, with his favorite compliment being, to those lucky enough to hear it, “Now we're gaining!” As a grandfather, Eric loved to cuddle babies and taught each of his little ones the value of “tight squeeze hugs.”
“Whisker rubs” were less popular with the kids but a favorite to Grandpa all the same.

Apart from farming and his family, the other joy of Eric's life was hunting in Africa. He made the trip a number of times, alongside many family members and friends. He completed The Big Five (elephant, rhino, buffalo, lion, & leopard) and was on the Omujeve Ranch at the time of his passing. Though elephant was his favorite hunt, he got just as excited about deer hunting with the grandkids.

In all of these stages and locations, both exotic and familiar, Eric was a loving husband, sharing love and life with his wife, Lori. He was Saved through the guidance of his mother and in turn tried to pass it on to others. He had a gift for storytelling and a love of Biblical preaching and was not afraid to share the Faith that animated him.

His body will be laid to rest in an African coffin and lowered into the soil of the Red River Valley: the two great works he leaves behind, farming and hunting, as united in his death as they were in his life. His greatest legacy is found in the lives of his sons and grandchildren.

Eric is survived by his wife of nearly 40 years, Lori; sons, Jordan (Brooke) and their children, Brynlie, Rowan, Eden, and Cove, and Justin ( Jazmyn) and their children, Boe, Hailey, Jolene, and Elsie; father, Jim Johnson; brother, Neil (Diane) Johnson; sister-in-law, Phyllis Johnson; Lori's sister, Stacy (Mark) Plencner; several nieces and nephews; his appreciated farm help; and those at Omujeve Ranch to whom he was more than a client: he was family.

Eric was preceded in death by his mother, Shirley; brother, Stefan Johnson; in-laws, Rolland and Donna Toupin; and nephew, Oliver Johnson.
