Harlen Anderson Obituary

Harlen W.E. Anderson, 88 of Alvarado, MN, died on Wednesday, August 5, 2020, in Bethany Home on University, Fargo, ND, with his family at his side.

Harlen Willis Elmer Anderson was born on November 5, 1931, in Marshall County, Minnesota, the son of Elmer and Louise Anderson. He was raised on a farm just south of Alvarado and attended Alvarado High School, graduating as Valedictorian in 1950. After a few years farming, Harlen enlisted in the US Army, serving from 1956-1960. Upon returning home, Harlen was united in marriage to Marie C. Sylvander. They made their home in Alvarado and raised two children together. In addition to farming, Harlen drove the local school bus for a number of years. Marie died on December 7, 2003, and Harlen continued to live in the same house in which they started their marriage. Harlen helped with his last wheat harvest at the age of 84, concluding a near-lifetime spent working the land.

Harlen had a great love for the Lord and was a longtime member of the Assemblies of God Church. He enjoyed golfing and collecting (too many) golf balls. He was proud of his family and blessed to have them nearby.

He is survived by his children, son, Joel (Amy) Anderson of Alvarado, and daughter, Jodell (Ruel) Johnson of Moorhead, MN; grandchildren, Jacob and Justin Anderson, and Ellika and Annika Johnson; sister-in-law, Dolores Anderson of East Grand Forks, MN; nephew, Ransel (Dawn) Anderson; nieces, Rhonda (David) Thompson, and Rochelle Anderson; and a number of nephews.

In addition to his wife, Marie, Harlen was preceded in death by his parents; an infant daughter, Jolayne; sister, Bernice; brother, Leland; and brother-in-law, Dale Sylvander.
