Hazel Hendrickson Obituary

Hazel Hendrickson, 98, of Grand Forks, ND, formerly of Warren, MN, passed away on Sunday evening, March 15, 2026, in Altru Hospital, Grand Forks.

Hazel Clarice Hanson was born on September 7, 1927, in (the now ghost town of) Robinhood, Saskatchewan. Her parents, Henry and Marie (Heierstad) Hanson, were Minnesotans who moved north to homestead in Canada. Attending Robinhood country school and then working as housekeeper at fifteen to raise a family's three boys, Hazel always had ties back home in the States. On a visit to her favorite Aunt Hilda in Oslo, MN, Hazel met a neighbor, home on leave from the US Navy, and it was practically love at first sight (and they each became single in short order).

She and Alvin Hendrickson were married on July 7, 1948 in Winnipeg, and returned to farm near his folks in Higdem Township by Oslo. She became a naturalized citizen soon after which cost $8.00. The young couple eventually moved to a farm west of Warren, where Hazel raised their four children until they were old enough to go to school- then promptly followed them! She worked as a custodian at Warren High School for 23 years, keeping the halls sparkling and the teenagers in line.

In her free time Hazel enjoyed making quilts for church missions, helping at the Senior Center, working on puzzles, reading, studying the scriptures, and playing the organ. She was fond of travel, especially with Alvin, and after retirement the two took many bus trips across the southern states, attended Navy shipman conferences and numerous faith gatherings, and even once ventured through Canada to Alaska in an RV with friends. In later years, as spry as ever, Hazel still enjoyed cleaning, and would visit her grandkids and assist with chores well into her 80s. She was a longtime volunteer at the Wheatland Cafe in Valley 4000- forever young at heart with so many fellow senior citizen to help!

Hazel was a person you wanted to know. She had a huge smile and was generous and hardworking. Underpinning this was her deep and abiding faith. Wherever she lived she was active in the church, and was never shy to share her faith- whether by word or action. Food was one of her favorite avenues to do this, and if you dropped by her house for a “little lunch,” it was as likely as not a full feast, complete with homemade soups, buns, lefse, and (in everyone's estimations) the finest sour cream raisin bars in the country.
And in the midst of it all, most importantly, she shared her love.
“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Phil. 4:13

Hazel is survived by three daughters and a son. Maureen Fredrickson, Susan Terwilleger, Robin Hendrickson, and Lee (Lorette) Hendrickson; 14 grandchildren, Scott (Becky) Fredrickson, Rhonda Nordoff, Paul (Ashley) Fredrickson, Crystal (Pete) Rooney, Katie (Danny) Wightman, Joel (Adrianne) King, Jessica (Ross) Klaphake, Jami, Jared (Danielle), and Jenna Woinarowicz, Benjamin (Danielle), Matthew (Shawna), and Andrew (Amy) Gjovik, and Emily (Cody) Dzielinski; 26 great-grandchildren, Brooke, Todd, Chase, Rylan, Bryon, Samantha, Nora, William, Edie, Jones, Kinley, Beckett, Talon, Haven, Vivian, Cecilia, Baylen, Julia, Jaxson, Dalton, Saige, Kim, MiAe, Jonah, Adelynn, and Carson; and great-great-granddaughters, Raina and Aria.

In addition to her husband, Alvin, who died on June 4, 2011, Hazel was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Rachelle Fredrickson; great-grandchildren, Nathan, Patrick Alvin, and Emma; all of her siblings, Ida (Menford) Hendrickson, Art (Gladys), Harvey (Vida), Mervyn (Hilda), Norman, and James Hanson; and all of Alvin's brothers, Orvin (Leona), Bloyd (Hazel), Erlin (Lorraine), and Kenneth Hendrickson.
