Ivadelle "Ivy" Quern Obituary

Ivy Quern, 96, of Grand Forks, ND, formerly of Oslo, MN, died on Tuesday, February 25, 2020, in Altru Hospital, Grand Forks, ND.

Ivadelle Juliette Nelson was born on July 10, 1923, in Oslo, one of the six children of Ingvald and Julie (Alstrom) Nelson. As a child, Ivy's family moved several times, living in both Sparta and Genoa, MN, before returning back to Oslo. She attended country school but had to end her education early as transportation to the schoolhouse was unavailable. On January 2, 1942, Ivy was united in marriage to Kenneth Edmund Quern in the church parsonage in Oslo. While he served his country in WWII, Ivy worked for the 3M company in St. Paul.

Upon Kenneth's return from the war, the young couple made their home in Grand Forks before coming “home” to Oslo once more in 1948, where they raised their three sons. Ivy was very active in her home parish, Zion Lutheran Church, and was a Sunday school teacher, vacation Bible school coordinator, and a lifelong member. Ivy and her sister Peggy ran a cafe in Oslo and she was also a member of the Oak Park Homemakers Club, the Oslo American Legion Auxiliary, and was a Cub Scout Den Mother for a number of years. In addition to all of this, she loved gardening, quilting, and sewing, and somehow found time to sell Tupperware on the side. Ivy enjoyed ten years of RV'ing and making her “home on wheels” with her husband, Kenneth, who passed away on February 15, 1999. For the next three years, Ivy continued to travel solo. She cherished her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and enjoyed instructing them in her hobbies and in the faith she loved so much.

Ivy is survived by her sons, Roger (Sharon) Quern, and Marlen (Marggy) Quern; daughter-in-law, Barbara Quern; grandchildren, Robin (Jim) Shambaugh, Marla (Todd) Berge, Ryan (Melissa) Quern, and Kristin (Geoffrey) Norberg; thirteen great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, Kenneth; Ivy was preceded in death by her son, Loren, who died on February 21, 2017; and all of her siblings: sisters, Marion Holter, Olga Tinnes, and Peggy Risteigen: and brothers, Kenneth and Lester Nelson.

In Lieu of Flowers, Memorials are Preferred to Riverside Cemetery, Oslo.
