James Flaten, 71, of Roseau, formerly of Warren, MN, died in his home of natural causes on Monday, April 18, 2022.
James Allan was born on March 27, 1951, in Warren, MN, the son of Andrew and Elda (Peterson) Flaten. He was raised on the family farm east of Warren with his ten siblings. He had an interest in agriculture from a young age, and after graduating from Warren High School in 1969, continued helping area farmers. In the years that followed, James worked for elevators in Newfolden and Badger, as well as custom combining on the side. He was united in marriage to Kathleen Yutrzenka on November 27, 1976, in St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Argyle.
Though the two were seemingly unalike, they made the perfect team and had two daughters: Christina and Suzanne. When Kathleen died suddenly on August 1, 1985 at the age of 35, James became a single parent and had to center his life around his girls. They moved to Roseau in 1990, where James began his nearly 30-year career as a welder with Polaris. With new predictable hours, James was able to better serve his daughters, always putting their needs before his own. In what spare time he found, James enjoyed hunting, shooting at the gun range, reloading shells, and large family meals during the holidays. He also had the knack for making the perfect Flaten-style lefse; a trait he passed along to his daughter, Christina.
James is survived by his daughter and her husband, Christina and Jason Linnell of Warren; siblings, David (Gloria), Dianne, Duane, Mark (Judy), Doris (Lloyd) Wang, Beverly (Ron) Neve, and Karen Flaten; brothers-in-law, Don (Gail) and Mark (Laurie) Yutrzenka; many nieces, nephews, and cousins; and Chris Pokladnik.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Kathleen; daughter, Suzanne, on June 19, 2012; his parents; sister, Dorothy (Warren) Hamrick; brother, Joel Flaten; and in-laws, Medard and Dorothy Yutrzenka.
