Janet Carlson

Janet Carlson, 97, formerly of Alvarado, MN, died on Tuesday, December 29, 2020, in North Star Manor, Warren, MN.

Born Janet Orvia Johnson, June 28, 1923 on a farm close to Alvarado, the third of six children born to Julius and Olga (Hendrickson) Johnson. At age four, Janet and her family moved to a farm in Higdem Township. She attended Lakeside Country School through the eighth grade and attended Oslo High School for two years.

Janet helped her family with the farm work in the spring, summer and fall. During the winter she was a nurses aide at the Deaconess Hospital in Grand Forks, ND. When WWII broke out, Janet took a job to support the war effort welding alongside her sister, Beatrice. The two “Rosie the Riveters” had a lot of fun together.

On August 7, 1949, Janet was married to Gerald “Buddy” Carlson at the East Grand Forks parsonage. They made their home in Alvarado and were blessed with three daughters.

Janet was baptized and confirmed at Kongsvinger Church in rural Oslo. She was a member of New Hope Lutheran Church in Alvarado.

Janet had beautiful flower gardens and was active in the New Hope LCW and bible study groups. She loved her family and her friends.

She is survived by her daughters, Gloria (Dave) Fagerlund of East Grand Forks, MN, Jane (Gordon) Skjerven of Mendota Heights, MN, and Julie (Jerome) Mall of Beatrice, NE; honorary daughter, Susan Sumner of Warren; nine grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; and brothers, Ernest (Judy) Johnson of Milton-Freewater, OR, and Dennis (Theresa) Johnson of Brooklyn Park, MN.

In addition to her husband, Gerald “Buddy” who died on April 27, 1977, Janet was preceded in death by her parents; and siblings, Beatrice Lundeen, Mildred Olson, and Carl Johnson.

She was a blessing to many.

FUNERAL SERVICE: 2:00 PM on Friday, July 23, 2021 in New Hope Lutheran Church, Alvarado, MN.

INTERMENT: Janet's graveside service was held on January 2, 2021 and she was interred next to her husband in Oak Lawn Cemetery in Alvarado, MN.
