Janice Marie Sherlock-Smidt, 75, beloved long-time teacher lost her short courageous battle with Leukemia on October 6, 2021, surrounded by her daughter, son-in-law, and grandkids.
Jan was born on September 3, 1946 in Grand Forks, North Dakota to James and Alice (Ljunggren) Sherlock. She graduated from Oslo High School in 1964 and University of North Dakota in 1970 with Elementary and Special Education degrees. Jan served in VISTA Americorps before moving to Anchorage, Alaska where she taught elementary education at Hubbard, Russian Jack, Mountain View, and Scenic Park Schools.
Jan gave birth to her daughter, Sara, in 1980. Jan instilled her love of traveling, exploring the world, and caring for others in her daughter. Jan returned to Grand Forks, North Dakota in 1998 to help care for her parents. In 2020, Jan moved to St. Joseph, Minnesota to help care for her two grandchildren, Emma and Ryan - the loves of her life. Nothing made Jan smile more than building Omegals, talking about, or listening to her grandchildren read.
Janice is survived by her daughter, Sara (Adam) Michaelson of St. Joseph, MN; grandchildren, Emma and Ryan Michaelson; best friend, MaryJane Hennemann of Grand Forks, ND; siblings Carl (Ilene) Sherlock of East Grand Forks, MN, Lorraine Sherlock of Manvel, ND, Scott (Denise) Sherlock of Oslo, ND; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and life-long friends.
She was preceded in death by parents, James and Alice Sherlock; and brother, Gary Sherlock.
MASS OF CHRISTIAN BURIAL: Monday, October 11, 2021, at 10:30 AM, in Holy Family Catholic Church, Grand Forks, ND.
VISITATION: One hour prior to Mass.
INTERMENT (following Lunch): Monday Afternoon, October 11, at 1:00 PM. in Riverside Cemetery, Oslo, MN.
