John Wilmoth Carlson, age 88, of Moorhead, MN, formerly of Warren, MN, passed away on July 26, 2025 at Lilac Memory Home in Moorhead, Minnesota with his loving family by his side.
John Wilmoth Carlson was born in Warren, Minnesota on November 15, 1936 to Wilmoth Carlson and Pearl (Schumacher) Carlson. John graduated from Warren High School in 1954. John was in the U.S. Army from July 19, 1955 to July 18, 1957. He was in the Armor Division in Fort Polk, LA. John continued to play basketball while in the service. Upon his discharge, he was married to Sharon Strunk (whom he continued to call her “his bride” throughout their entire marriage) on August 3, 1957 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Warren. They have been married for 68 years. John and Sharon were blessed with four children, John Tyler Carlson & wife Shelly, Mitchell Robert Carlson & wife Debbie, his twin daughters Jill Diane (Carlson) Hanson & husband Scott and Jodi Ann (Carlson) Kleven & husband Jeff.
John started working at the Post Office at the age of 15, 1951. He worked his way up to becoming the Postmaster in Warren until he retired on January 3, 1992. Thereafter John and Sharon enjoyed their winters in Mesa, Arizona where they played golf and tennis. They returned to Minnesota in 2022. While in Warren, John and Sharon spent their time watching their children participate in football, basketball, track, baseball, volleyball and golf. They spent many nights listening to them at band concerts, choir concerts and musicals.
They were blessed with 12 grandchildren Tyler Carlson (Brooke), Andrew Carlson, Emily Kastner, Nick Carlson, Dylan Carlson & Brooke Larson (Casey), Kristen Witherspoon (Max), Katelyn Thiele (Trevor), Kelsey Lunneborg (Alex), Kelly Carney (Cass), Kullen Carney, and Kortney Carney. Great grandchildren: Alex, Summer, and Jeffrey Carlson, Everett and Tegan Thiele, Rylan and Eli Lunneborg, Krew Carney, Kinslee Carney and Kynstin Campagna.
John was active in the community having been on the Church Council of OSL, Warren Ambulance, Warren School Board, Warren City Council, Cub Scout leader, President of Riverside Golf Course, and the Warren Jaycee. He still holds the record for the most points, 56, in a basketball game with only 6 minute quarters. He was a very proud Warren Pony.
John was predeceased in death by his parents, Wilmoth and Pearl Carlson, his sister, Corinne Nelson and many nieces, nephews and friends.
FUNERAL SERVICE: 10:30 AM on Saturday, August 9, 2025 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Warren, MN.
VISITATION: One hour before services in the church.
INTERMENT: Greenwood Cemetery, Warren, MN.
MILITARY SERVICE BY: Warren American Legion Post #27 and National Guard Funeral Honors
