Joseph Louis Deschene, 85, of Argyle, MN, passed away on Wednesday, February 26, 2020 at North Valley Health Center in Warren, MN.
Joseph Deschene was born on August 7, 1934, on the family farm in Argyle, MN, one of fourteen children of Albert A. and Georgianna (Hebert) Deschene. He was raised on the farm and loved the land all his life. He attended Crookston AC and graduated from Argyle High School in 1953. Following graduation, he enlisted in the US Army, and was honorably discharged. On April 14, 1959, Joseph was united in Holy Matrimony to Mary Ann Szklarski in Assumption Catholic Church in Florian, MN. They made their home on the farm where Joe would instill in his children a love for the land and, particularly, the family garden; this had to be thoroughly weeded and the sunflowers hoed before any play could be had.
Early on, the family began going up to Springsteel Resort on Lake of the Woods. What began in tents (then a bus), ended in a permanent family lake trailer where many happy memories were made. Joe had many hobbies which included deer hunting and fishing; he enjoyed the many fishing outings with his brothers and passing this passion on to his children and grandchildren. The family enjoyed their annual Labor Day weekend trips to the Cities with the Deschene family. The kids would load up in the back of the family pickup with their banquet chicken excited to enjoy the many festivities; such as Valley Fair, Twins games, Canterbury Downs and the Deschene family BBQ. He was active in his church, St. Rose of Lima, the local Knights of Columbus, American Legion Post 353 of Argyle and the Argyle Lions. In 2009, Joseph and Mary Ann celebrated their 50th Anniversary. Joe retired from both farming and his job of 36 years as a lab foreman for American Crystal Sugar.
Joe is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Mary Ann; children, Debbie (Larry) Sabol, Dave (Ronda), Tim (Jodie), Jerry (Ruann), and Tony (Melissa) Deschene; grandchildren, Amanda (Mark) Wimpfheimer, Michael (Ashley) Sabol, Rio McGarrah, Josh (Kadee) Rieland, Ashley (Alex) Lawson, Ryan Deschene, Aaron Deschene, Chris Deschene, Brenna (Aaron) Olson, Hannah (Hayden) Sczepanski, Shayla Miller, Evan Deschene, Alec (Alyssa) Deschene, Madison Deschene, and Josephine Deschene; great-grandchildren, Kadence, Landon, Naomi, Adalynn, Jenna, Avery, Emily, Hailey, Charlie, Evelyn, and baby Lawson due April 2020; siblings, Richard (Lorraine) Deschene, Theresa Gabriel, and Elizabeth Kleinvachter; and sister-in-law, Doreen Deschene and his special friends Susan and Pietro.
