Judith (Mackin) Hollander

Judith Anne (Mackin) Hollander, 77, of Hobe Sound, FL, passed away in her daughter's home while on hospice, Saturday morning, June 8, 2024, in Grand Forks, ND.

Judy was born on June 13, 1946, in Evanston, Illinois to Howard and Gladys (Vlasick) Mackin. At two years old, her family moved to California, putting down roots in Altadena. Between her childhood home and later moving across the street, Judy lived on Highland Avenue for almost 40 years. It was here that she grew up among the San Gabriel mountains, attended school, got married, raised two daughters, and pursued a career in law enforcement. Judy attended the Los Angeles Policy Academy in the early 1970's and was the only woman in her graduating class. She held her own among the men, easily running a 6-minute mile and scaling a ten-foot wall, and earned her position as a sheriff's deputy at the Altadena substation. Judy had a special talent for undercover work and became a lieutenant before declining a captaincy promotion, instead retiring from the force and opening her own business helping the elderly manage their finances.

Her care for all of humanity extended to the young, too, and Judy was a foster parent to over forty children, one of whom became her son after coming into her care at two weeks old. After a few more years in Altadena, she began a series of moves (every five years it seemed) around the country with her husband, George Hollander. Arizona was her favorite state and where she spent the most time. She lived in Sierra Vista, Flagstaff, Sedona, and Prescott, the highlight of which was life on a ranch and raising goats. She also spent a few years back in California and in Magnolia, TX. Eventually, she and George ended up in Hobe Sound, FL. She was so happy to be near her brother Dan! Three years later, George died there in January of 2024.

Always self-motivated, Judy picked up skills to pass the time (like sewing, making jewelry, and decorating ornamental cakes)and always made many friends along the way. Her oldest friend, Marcia Findlay, was her constant companion from junior high, exchanging a phone call every day.

Judy is survived by her children Barbara (Chris) Rosebrough of Grand Forks, Tami (Doug) Grove of Vietnam, and Aaron Coleman of Portland, OR; two brothers, Dan (Jeanne) Mackin and George (Hemma) Mackin; grandchildren, Josh (Nikki), Christina (Santiago), Faith (Alex), Mikey, Blake, and Logan; great-grandson, Benjamin; and brother-in-law, Bruce Carrington.

In addition to her husband, George, Judy was preceded in death by her parents, Howard and Gladys; and two sisters, Patti Carrington and Betsy Singleton.

FUNERAL LITURGY: Monday, June 24, 2024, at 1:00 PM, in Kongsvinger Lutheran Church, Oslo, MN.
VISITATION: One hour prior.
Per her wishes, cremation will follow the funeral.
