Leonard Kathman, 92, of Grand Forks, ND, formerly of Argyle, MN, passed away at Edgewood Healthcare in Grand Forks on May 27, 2026.
Leonard Dale Kathman was born on November 5, 1933, in Wanger Township, Stephen, MN to Harry and Theresa (Pawlowski) Kathman. He was raised in Argyle and attended a country school just west of the family farm. He entered the US Army in 1957 for two years, stationed at Fort Smith, AR and Fort Lewis,WA.
On June 14, 1958, Leonard was united in Holy Matrimony to Theresa Grochowski in Assumption Catholic Church in Florian, MN. They made their home together in Argyle, where they raised their five children. Leonard worked at the Argyle Co-op Warehouse Grain Elevator for 35 years. After retirement in 1995, he continued to work part-time at the elevator for 18 more years, helping during the busy fall and spring seasons. Leonard also worked to plant and harvest potatoes on his family’s land. Leonard was a volunteer fireman in Argyle for 20 years. During part of his tenure, he served as Fire Chief. Theresa passed away on August 29, 1984.
Leonard married Betty Keegan at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Grand Forks on September 6, 1991. He moved to her farm in Grand Forks and was very active in maintaining the farm, caring for the garden, mowing the large yard and trapping any wild nuisance animals. Leonard enjoyed hunting, fishing, polka dancing, and playing cards. He was also known for his “skyhook” shot in a friendly basketball game of PIG.
Left to mourn his passing are his wife Betty; his son Ken (Linda) Kathman of Maplewood MN; daughters, Kat Geving of Lakeville, MN, Geralyn (Rick) Altendorf of Prior Lake, MN, Sandy (Kevin) Mannetter of Eagan, MN, and Sharon (Kent) Chrisman of Edmond, OK; his stepchildren, Kelly (Angela) Keegan, Joan Lind, and Linda (Paul) Paschke; along with many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and siblings, Joann St. Germain, Leona Paulson, and Ron (Libby) Kathman.
In addition to his wife, Theresa, Leonard is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Donald; and stepdaughter, Carolyn Keegan.
MASS OF CHRISTIAN BURIAL: Saturday, June 13, 2026, at 11:00 AM, in St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church of Argyle, MN.
VISITATION: one hour prior to Mass.
INTERMENT: St. Rose Catholic Cemetery, Argyle.
