Marion Durand, 101, of Oslo, MN, passed away on Thursday morning, March 3, 2022 at Valley Senior Living in Grand Forks, ND.
Marion Arlys Tinnes was born on April 14, 1920 in Oak Park Township, Marshall County, MN, the daughter of Gilbert and Emma (Skibli) Tinnes. She was raised in the Oslo area and graduated from Oslo High School. Marion married Russell Durand and they made their home in Fork Township, Marshall County, MN. Three children were born to this union – Mavis “Susie”, Jane, and Gary. Russell was killed in a car accident in 1945. Marion married Garnet Durand and they lived on the farm in Fork Township. To this union was born Daryl. They moved into Oslo in the 1960's. Garnet was killed in a car accident in 1975. Marion continued to live in Oslo until moving to Tufte Manor in Grand Forks in 2016.
In over a century of historic events such as women’s suffrage, The Great Depression, two wars, the invention of color TV, a man walking on the moon, a President assassinated, and the dawning of the computer age, Marion lived an ordinary life that became an extraordinary legacy. She raised her family. She cooked, cleaned, fed, clothed, read to, played with, and tucked in her children, then her grandchildren, her great-grandchildren, and one great-great-granddaughter.
She was an active member of the community, attending Zion Lutheran Church and being a faithful member of its Ladies Aid where she enjoyed quilting and visiting with members of the congregation. Among her favorite events were the Oslo Fish Fries on Friday nights, where she prided herself in having every regular customer’s order memorized. Marion was an avid reader before her eyesight diminished. She was a birdwatcher, nature lover, and red squirrel antagonist. The best afternoons were spent at her table over several cups of coffee, looking out the window, visiting or playing rummy. You would never leave Marion’s place hungry – she made sure to have almond bark bars, her superior homemade buns, or maybe macaroni salad on hand. Her scalloped potatoes were renowned. Holidays wouldn’t be complete without her lefse, and some form of cards or dice, and Marion had an infamous “poker face” that gave her hand away every time.
With all the things she loved, Marion’s truest joy in life was being around children (of all ages.) No amount of chaos ever ruffled her; she relished knocks on the door, secrets and giggles, whirlwinds of activity, and the “clean” mess of having children around. She let kids be “kids” and because of this, she was known as “Grandma” and “Auntie” Marion to many. She touched so many lives and will be missed dearly.
Left to mourn her passing are her daughter, Jane (Carl) Osowski of Oslo, MN; two daughters-in-law, Diane Durand of Argyle, MN and Jonie Durand of Mahnomen, MN; grandchildren Raymond Osowski, Roger (Carol) Osowski, Nonda (Brent) Mack Solseng, and Scott (Jen) Osowski, Shelly (Brad) Grochow, Susie (Randy) Laurin, and Chad (Heidi) Durand, Shawn and Becky Durand; great-grandchildren Cody and Jake Osowski, Henlee Osowski, Travis and Kyle Mack, Ethan, Dylan, and Dorian Osowski, Brady and Jenna Laurin, Carson, Cullen, and Oliver Durand, Taylor and Tanner Skjordal, Trevor Sott, Quentin and Julian Durand; great-great-granddaughter Chelsea Osowski; brother, Gilmen (Bonnie) Tinnes of Bemidji, MN and their children Janna (Todd) Wolter and Jon; “honorary” son Denny (Sherry) Johnson; and her special “grandson,” Ivan.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Gilbert and Emma; two husbands, Russell and Garnet and three children, Mavis “Susie”, Gary, and Daryl.
