Martha Jean Whitmer Obituary

Martha Jean Whitmer, 76, of Stephen, MN died with two of her daughters at her side, on Monday, July 11, 2022, in Kittson Memorial Nursing Home, Hallock, MN.

Martha Jean was born on April 7, 1946, in Louisville, KY. She attended Sacred Heart School in Louisville and was interested in education from a young age. She attended Eastern Kentucky University, University of Louisville, and University of Indiana, completing her schooling with a Masters Degree in Special Education. On January 29, 1966, Martha Jean was united in marriage to George W. Whitmer in Campbellsville, IN. The two made their home and started their family in Louisville; later moving to Jeffersonville, IN; and Miami, FL (in 1986).

By the time she retired, Martha Jean had educated children at Our Mother of Sorrows School, Louisville, and Booker T. Washington and Neva King Cooper in Miami-Dade school district. In 2008, Martha Jean and George moved to Stephen, to live closer to their daughter, Heidi. When their other daughter, Marylou, followed, the family was reunited in the northern Red River Valley, where Martha and George could stay active grandparents with school activities and enjoyed family time every day.

Martha Jean enjoyed scrap booking and gardening at home, but had a true passion for travel, taking trips all over the country and world. Her wishes were to have her remains spread in Hawaii and her memory kept in the hearts of her loved ones.

She is survived by her husband of 56 years, George; her children, David (Toni) Whitmer, Marylou Whitmer, and Heidi (Jason) Hanson; grandchildren, Caleb (Brianna) Banks, Megan (Blaze) Kandler, Shane Banks, Andrew Hanson, Christopher Todd Whitmer Jr, and Emily, Tiffany, Tabitha, Taylor, Trinity, Lilly, and Kendal Whitmer; many great-grandchildren; siblings, Kay (Doug) Lynch, Karen Wallace, and Boyd Peck Jr.

Martha Jean was preceded in death by her son, Christopher (Harriet) Whitmer; parents, Margaret (Reidling) and Orran Baker and Calvin Stout; biological father, Boyd Peck Sr.; infant sister, Marylouise; brother-in-law, Tim Wallace.

SERVICES: Will be conducted by her family at a later date.
