Vern Lysford, 61, of Oslo, MN, passed away on Friday morning, June 24, 2022, after a 10-year battle with metastatic Melanoma that he faced with grace, dignity, and his UNIQUE sense of humor.
Vernon M. Lysford was born on September 29, 1960 in Karlstad, MN, the third of five children of Melvyn and Irene (Wallace) Lysford. He grew up in Kennedy, MN, and graduated from Kennedy High School in 1979.
He attended University of North Dakota and graduated from the University of Minnesota-Morris in 1983. He played football at both colleges. He was a member of UND's 1979 NCC Championship team which was inducted into their Hall of Fame.
He was married to his first wife, Jill Carlson, on December 12, 1981 in Hallock. Together they raised three children, Melanie, Megan, and Garrett.
Vern was a Certified Management Accountant and also Enrolled to Practice before the IRS. He spent his career working in accounting and finance, mainly for Superpumper Inc. in Minot, ND, and Nordic Fiberglass in Warren.
He was very proud of his association with UND Football and traveled extensively to watch their games. He was an associate member of the Canadian Mafia fishing cartel. He was a licensed pilot and scuba diver, and also enjoyed golf, racquetball, and annoying his family- not necessarily in that order.
Vern and Jill created the Melanie Lysford Foundation, which for 23 years has awarded scholarships to students of Jim Hill Middle School to attend Jazz Band Camp at the International Peace Gardens, and Advanced Space Academy of Hunstville, AL.
He is survived by his long-suffering wife of 40 years, Jill of Oslo; daughter, Megan (Michael Meehlhause) Lysford of Bemidji; son, Garrett (Kaylee) Lysford of Pasadena, MD; “adopted” daughters, Ester Ferret Mas (Jeremy) of Bristol, UK, and Chelsie (Chris Lommen) McLaughlin and Rheanna (Brandon) Moles, both of Phoenix, AZ; “adopted” granddaughter, Eva Lommen; siblings, Mary Kay (Ken) Schuh of Lakota, ND; brothers, Troy (Kathleen) and Tim (Josie) both of Dalhart, TX, and Doug (Nancy) of Karlstad; in-laws, Jan (Rob) Sobolik of Moorhead, MN, Joan (Greg) Gottsman of Maple Grove, MN, Jacquie (Tim) Schulte of Hallock, and Eric Carlson of Mooreton, ND; along with a couple 13-14 nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; in-laws, Gordon and Kay Carlson; and his oldest daughter, Melanie, who passed away on February 27, 1999.
