Verne Nyblad, 93, of Stephen, MN, died on Thursday, April 9, 2020, one day shy of his 94th Birthday, in North Star Manor, Warren, MN.
Verne Ardell was born on April 10, 1926, in Oslo, MN, to Oscar and Stella (Knutson) Nyblad. He was raised in the Alvarado/Oslo area and moved to the family farm near Argyle as a child. He attended country school and later graduated from Argyle High School. He was an excellent student and was known as “The Professor” because of the briefcase full of schoolwork he carried. He worked at the local hardware store during his school years and worked on the family farm following graduation.
Along with farming, Verne also worked for Sam Silverman at his men's clothing store in Grand Forks. He had many good stories about his time working there and will be remembered as a well-dressed gentleman. In 1979, Verne was married to Kathryn Anderson. He helped raise her three boys (Mike, Mark, and Tim) and they all worked on the farm as a family. Many happy gatherings were held at their home in Stephen, MN.
He was active in his church, First Presbyterian in Stephen, and later, First Lutheran. He was also a member of the Swedish Agassiz Heritage Society. He retired from farming in 2003, though he always kept a keen interest in it until the end. In addition to discussions about farming, Verne never tired of talking about the weather or politics. He and his companion cat, Tiny, could spend hours watching congressional proceedings on C-SPAN. In 2019, Verne moved in North Star Manor in Warren, MN, where he often praised the staff for the compassionate care he received.
Verne is survived by his sister, Darlyne Benson; and nephew, Chris Benson. He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother-in-law, Calvin.
