Wayne Nelson Obituary

Wayne Nelson, 86, of Oslo, MN, died in his home surrounded by family after a valiant journey with cancer on Wednesday, January 17, 2024.

Wayne Noble Nelson was born on August 7, 1937, in Warren, MN, the son of Noble and Irene (Bergman) Nelson. He was raised on the family farm along Highway 1 in Oslo which his family homesteaded in 1888. Wayne continued this legacy on the land, working on it as a boy before completing high school at the Northwest School of Agriculture in Crookston, MN. Upon graduating in 1955, Wayne enlisted in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Washington, D.C. as a member of the Honor Guard. He assisted with funerals, transported generals, and flanked President Eisenhower in the course of his duties. Wayne turned down re-elistment and the chance to become a sentry at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, preferring to come home to farm the land that he loved.

On June 25, 1965, Wayne married Judith Bredeson, a home economics teacher at Oslo High School, and the couple moved onto the family farm. Wayne and Judy raised three children and celebrated 56 years of marriage. Wayne's greatest concerns in life were his wife, family and farm. He loved to work both hard and diligently. He was involved in every planting and harvest, missing only one year of driving tractor in 2023. For leisure, Wayne spent time with his wife, whether at the lake (with the grandkids, too) or at home. Mowing, driving his beloved convertible or checking on fields and sugar beet piles were his favorite pastimes. He also enjoyed chatting over coffee at the cafe, and shaking dice for the bill. He and Judy were longtime members of Zion Lutheran Church in Oslo, and he was also a member of the Oslo Lions, the Oslo American Legion and was a board member of both Valley State Bank and the Oslo Farmer's Union (Cenex).

Wayne is survived by his children: Mark (Stacy) Nelson, Kara (Tim) Pitchford and Paula (Craig) Nelson; grandchildren, Jacob (Katie) Pitchford, Erik (fiancée, Kayla) Pitchford, Anna Pitchford, Dane Nelson, Kjersten Nelson, Ally Nelson and Kate Nelson; sisters, Sandy Roiger and Ilene (Carl) Sherlock; many nieces and nephews; and farming buddy, Trent Stengl.

In addition to his wife, Judy, who died on November 3, 2021, Wayne was preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Kathy Lunski.

The family would like to thank the Altru Cancer Center’s exceptional Staff, especially Dr. Dentchev and Ericka, for their attentive kindness to Wayne these last years.
