We are so sorry to hear of Neil's passing. We have a fond memory of when Neil and Marilyn came to visit, and had many great stories about Warren and the old days. My connection is through my mom, Doris (Anderson) Melberg, who grew up on the farm near Warren. She has always spoken so highly of the Mattsons that it seemed like they were family when they stopped to say hello. And they were so gracious at my Uncle Bob's funeral. They certainly seemed to enjoy life and each other very much.

I was so happy to spend Saturday with Jeanne Pokrzywinski Sizemore, my sister-in-law, but was so surprised when she mentioned Neil's passing. She put it on FB right away so I, and others, would see it. It must have been one of the days I didn't spend much time on FB.
Anyway, I am sorry you haven't heard from me until now. Jerry always spoke highly of Neil and your whole family. We cherished the time you spent in our home here in Georgia. It was an honor to have you and get to know you a little. Prayers for you and the family during this time of grief and prayers of praise that remind us of God's promise of heaven.

Marilyn,
Arvin and I send our condolences to you and your family. I am glad that we had the opportunity to meet Neil. He leaves an admirable legacy. I appreciated his strong sense of history and wonderful pride in his ancestry. It was rewarding to share a mutual interest in the history of early Watertown, Minnesota and the Mattson pioneers in that community. We pray that God will surround you with love and support during these difficult days.

Dear Marilyn and family,
I just heard of Neil's passing from Tara Bischoff, and posted to fb. Thought I would google-search, and found Dubore!!
As I was writing, I realized that I have known/heard about you and Neil and your family, for over 50 years!! We connected, of course, through your sister Grace and her family. So sorry to hear Neil is gone.
It was so interesting to read his obituary, and fill in some of the info gaps!! What a cool guy, and what an incredible legacy!!

I remember a Sunday afternoon, MANY years ago, when I was working on my Echoes from the Past column at the TRF Times. I was sitting there hand-writing the items with my head stuck into the microfilm reader machine, looking at old papers from about 1890 or so. Neil and Marilyn stopped in and he came over to me and started chatting about the "old days". We shared stories about several of the old-time newspaper characters and Sen. Halvor Steenerson, who Neil had actually met at one time. He also complimented me on the great job I was doing on the history page for the Times. THAT was Neil Mattson. He was a wonderful storyteller, a terrific historian, and a guy who had the knack for relating well to all people, with a sense of what would make the person that he was conversing with, feel good. My prayers and thoughts are with his family, who, I am sure, know that his passing is a great loss to the community, as well as themselves.

Marilyn & Family,
I have very fond memories of Neil from hanging around the house & Sheaf. When he would question Ken & I, in our younger years, about what we were doing on any particular night & we would respond with, "I don't know, just driving around." He would look over his glasses & say "Yeaahh...", put on his Stetson & walk out the door. And then in later years visiting with Neil & Marilyn about their trips or hearing stories about my Grandparents was always special. Please accept my deepest condolences.

My condolences to Duane and the family on the passing of Mr. Mattson. My earliest memory of Neil is of him taking photos at community events. When Duane and I got to be friends, we would often visit the Sheaf and see Neil very busy at work. The first paycheck I ever got was from the Sheaf, and my first byline appeared in the Sheaf. Once during a sleepover, I offered to show Marilyn how to call Hawaii for free. In those days, there was no charge for long distance directory assistance. I don't think I ever heard the end of that from Neil; I was always "that kid who called Hawaii" on his phone.

More recently, we would often see Neil & Marilyn on trips to Warren. They filled their retirement with much travel and gardening. The regular accounts of their travels were published in the Sheaf and then recounted in the family's famous Christmas cards. Their garden must have been an acre.

Neil took great pride in his four years as president of the Minnesota Historical Society. He was the only president in the society's 166 year history from outside the Minneapolis-St. Paul area. Neil was also very proud of his role in establishing Settlers' Square at the Marshall County Fair and helping to develop the period rooms in that museum.

The last time I saw Neil was after an election with which he was greatly disappointed. He was so steamed, I didn't get a chance to tell him we'd supported the same losing candidate!

Peace to his survivors and to his memory.

Our sympathy to your whole family Marilyn, in Neil's passing. Not sure if his death was expected, but it's never easy no matter what the age. So glad Lloyd and Sharon can represent our family. We pray you will receive comfort from God's Word which is our only source of hope, strength and comfort at these times. John 3:16; and 14:1-6. We will be praying for you tomorrow and in the days ahead. Cousin Doris (Melvie) Anderson (for Rod, too.)

Dear Marilyn, Jean, Mark, Brittany, Jillian and all your families -

I am so sorry to hear of Neil's passing. My thoughts and prayers are certainly with you all at this time. I have so many wonderful memories of Neil - his kindness to me, his interest in all of us, his deep interest in history, Billy singing "Children of the Heavenly Father" to him at Billy's 50th, his loyalty to your wonderful family, all their travels to see everyone and everything, his enjoying my father at Christmas 2008, the Swedish festivals, Chautauqua, I could go on and on. He will be truly missed. Neil positively added to this world in a way that few can, he will be missed by us all. I am proud to feel that I was part of his world and family.

I will be thinking of you all especially these next few days as you go through all the activities and I know that they will all be an honor to Neil.

Please accept my condolences on the loss of Neil to the entire Mattson family. What words can one say or write about a man who lived such a full life that have been said or written about after such a life that panned nearly 9 decades , living history we read about. One of my early memories was seeing him with his camera to take photos at a Memorial Day event, I think it was one my dad spoke at in the late 60's. He became for many I believe the great story teller of not only news of Warren, but the people that traveled through it, and lived there and he was a great witness to all that went on, its people and their lives. The Sheaf and especially his column 'Chaff' became for former residents the very fabric of the city and Neil so greatly kept the high standards of reporting news and all he learned from his father, greater family , He would often tell of visits or letters from past residents of news or remarks, in that no one really completely leaves Warren and the times one had. His love of history is evident not only the great works he did while on the board of the local, county and state historical society, those of today at MSHS stand on his and others shoulders as the wonderful Minnesota History Center stands as a great structure that says we the people and leaders of Minnesota care about the past as we move into the future. His wonderful reprinting of old letters from settlers and travelers of Minn's past and past Warren people like my great grandparents were so great to read about. His travels with Marylin became well known and so well written, always finding new places to discover or have another look at. He was a longtime and very loyal friends to my parents, both our families are active, large with several siblings that were in same classes, He was at the U-M for my mom's last 2 years there. It was fun to be around my dad and Neil in conversation. He was very proud of his Swedish roots that will always be part of his legacy knowing where he and much of his ancestors came from. In many ways I think his interest in history it is the interest in the journey man has taken, from the boats to the new world, to America from Europe and then the river boats, ox carts, and explorer days to the early Warren settlers and growth in the early 20th century and forward, Yes, with his final journey now taken, he leaves us much to read, see, enjoy , we can thank him for much of the pride in our home town, our families, our past and future he wrote or spoke on over the years. As it says, Some sheaves, kernels and Chaff, things that are all part of the Bread of Life. RIP, Steve Saetre.

My condolences to Rick, Brian, Duane and to the rest of the family on the loss of your father. I always liked to see your parents together at the fair, usually at the Historical Society where I was spending time with my parents. You were blessed with many years of having him as your father and friend. The City of Warren is also losing a great "man around town".
